Hi, I really enjoyed your photos and experiences. Thanks for posting such an interesting blog.

I hope this question isn’t too much trouble, but I am interested in bringing my family down to NW Washington and wondering if you can recommend a place to camp for us? We have 3 kids ages 4 to 9, a dog, a tent trailer, and a desire to swim and hike! We’ve only camped in BC before and would like to come down your way.

I’ve been looking on the state park website but there are so many to read about and such tiny photos!

    Thank you!!!

  2. Hi Sarah,
There are so many great places to choose from, but if I were to pick one that would suit your needs I would pick Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island. It is wonderful for young children and families, and we spent many weekends there when our kids were younger. :)
I haven’t blogged about Deception Pass (you can bet I will be planning a trip this summer!) but I can give you a few details. It’s located near Oak Harbor Wa, and has a beach (a beautiful beach) access on the Puget Sound. It also has a lake (Cranberry Lake)with a shallow swimming area that my kids loved! There are awesome beach and interpretive trails as well.
There is an historic point just before the entrance to the park. You have to go over Deception Pass Bridge before you get to the park, so you can’t miss it. The waterway underneath was named by George Vancouver in 1792 and you can read about it if you stop and park at the bridge. You are allowed to walk across the bridge but it is pretty daunting if you are afraid of heights.
Just minutes away, and across the bridge the other way is Bowman Bay/Rosario Beach. If you have the time to explore I would head over there as well. There are more trails, and the beach is beautiful as well. I have a blog post for Bowman Bay/Rosario beach.

So, in my opinion Deception Pass is one of the best state parks I’ve been to. There are many things to do and you won’t be bored.
The link below will give you all of the info you need. Reservations are required so I would check it out now. They go fast!

Thanks for reading my blog and have a great time! (let me know if you decide on Deception Pass)
